Tour of the Municipality:
The Olympic Shooting-Range installations are within the municipal boundaries of Latsia Municipality to the South-West of the Municipality. The Shooting-Range's installations are considered of very high standards, that's why International and European games are very often hosted here. In the Olympic Shooting-Range grounds operates a cafeteria which is open to the public. Let it be noted that the Shooting-Range's installations cover an area of 100 ha. (1 hectare = 10.000 sq. metres).
The Olympic Shooting-Range was constructed in 1989 in “Apalos” area in Latsia. It belongs to the Nicosia Shooting Organisation and it is one of the best shooting-ranges in Europe and a jewel for our Municipality. The inaugural ceremony took place on 11 May 1989, by the then President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr George Vasiliou. It is one of the large Athletic Centres constructed by the Cyprus Sports Organisation for the needs of the Small European States Sports’ organising, which was undertaken and successfully organised by Cyprus in 1989. The first major shooting function hosted by the Olympic Shooting-Range was the shooting games of the SESS. Afterwards, in 1991, the Commonwealth (European Section) shooting games took place.
Ever since, the International Shooting Sport Federation and the European Shooting Confederation have entrusted the organising of all major paneuropean and international shooting championships. More specifically, the Olympic Shooting-Range hosted:
- The World Shooting Cup in 1994
- The World Shooting Championship in 1995
- The World Shooting Cup in 1997
- The Paneuropean Shooting Championship in 1998
- The World Shooting Cup in 1999
- The World Shooting Cup finals in 2000
- The World Shooting Cup in 2001
- The World Shooting Championship in 2003
- The Paneuropean Shooting Championship in 2004
Other than the above games, in which top shooters from around Europe and the World participate, every year, around March, the Olympic Shooting-Range organises the “CYPRUS GRAND PRIX” games, which from 2002 are called “VICTORY - CYPRUS GRAND PRIX”, which are included in the official “calendar” of the European Confederation and in which more than 400 athletes take part. They Olympic Shooting-Range also organises annually 2 to 3 pancyprian games for each sport, as part of the World Shooting Championship.
Also, in 2007, the World Shooting Games will be hosted in the Olympic Shooting-Range (the last before the Beijing Olympics), and in 2008, some time before the Olympics, the Paneuropean Shooting Games.
The Olympic Shooting-Range, one of the largest in the world, has 4 skid fields and 4 trap fields (Olympic specifications), independently, on which 48 shooters can compete simultaneously. It also has 8 fields for the popular SPORTING sport (hunting stages), attracting most hunters’ interest. The above are sports with wooden pigeon, taking place in open space. The Olympic Shooting-Range also houses fixed-target installations, where air-gun sports take place (rifles and pistols). The fixed-target room has 18 positions for rifles and pistols.
Beyond the athletic installations, the Olympic Shooting-Range houses the Nicosia Shooting Organisation offices, as well as a cafeteria-diner, for the needs of the members and their friends. It is open daily (except on Monday) from 10:00 a.m. until late at night.
Nicosia Shooting Organisation (NISHOR), to which the Olympic Shooting-Range belongs, is the oldest shooting society in Cyprus. It was founded in 1968 and today it numbers around 250 members (regular and novice). NISHOR is one of the founding members of the Cyprus Shooting Confederation, established in 1983.
