CITY-TWINNING WITH KILKIS MUNICIPALITY.

In the summer of 1992, Mr. Theodore Aspasides, then vice-president of the Thessalonica Municipal Council, happened to be in Latsia. During a conversation he had with the then Mayor of Latsia, Mr. Christakis Christophides, the latter expressed the idea that Latsia should be twinned with a Municipality from Greece, preferably a Municipality from the limitary area of Macedonia district. It did not take long time, and Mr. Aspasides informed the Municipality of Latsia that the Municipality of Kilkis, a town about 48 Km (30 mi) to the North of Thessalonica, was interested in the city-twining. After a visit to Kilkis by a four-member representation from the Municipality of Latsia in June 1993, on the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the town, the then President of the Municipal Council, Mr. Anastasios Amanatides and Mr. Christakis Christophides agreed to the city-twining, which took place in June and July 1994, with great success. The then Mayor of Kilkis, Mr. Theodore Pavlides and the then Mayor of Latsia, Mr. Christakis Christophides, laid down a basic principle which included participation in all events not only from the elected authorities, but also by the local people, a policy that was followed and re-enforced by the succeeding Mayors. Since 1994, hundreds of citizens from Latsia have visited Kilkis, and the vice versa. For all these reasons, the city-twinning is regarded as one of the most successful in the Mediterranean area.

The mayor of Kilkis is Dimitris Terzidis and the mayor of Latsia is Panayiotis A. Kyprianou.
